Artist Bio

Jethro Longwe is a contemporary realist painter, born in 1983 in Nkhotakota, a small town along Lake Malawi. He currently lives and practises his profession in Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. He enjoys the warmth and affection of his people and the diverse local tribes.

As native of the warm heart of Africa, his vivid and lively paintings pay homage to his homeland. His distinctive personal style emanates peace and tranquillity, and expresses the warmth and calm spirit in the atmosphere of Malawian culture. The artist is skilled in mediums including oil paint, acrylic, gouache, charcoal, and watercolour.

Heart-warming portraits, picturesque landscapes, majestic wildlife, traditional ceremonies, and musical instruments, are all brought to life with contrasting and harmonious colours and bold compositions. As the artist explains, “I am a visual story-teller and I use my art to share about my people and my culture.”

As a child, he grew up in a society that did not embrace art as a profession. However, Jethro Loved to spend hours locked away in his room developing his talent in drawing. Despite the lack of resources, he went on to study formal art with the University of Malawi, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities degree. He later went on to earn a diploma in Visual Communication at Ruth Prowse School of Art in Cape Town South Africa, and was the recipient of two Full Tuition Academic Scholarships from Ruth Prowse School of art.
